Friedman, from a Brooklyn Jewish family, pioneered space-based astronomy at the Naval Research Laboratory, flying instruments on captured V-2 and later sounding rockets above the atmosphere. His detectors first mapped the Sun's X-ray and ultraviolet output and helped open X-ray astronomy of stars beyond the Sun. He received the National Medal of Science in 1968.
