Henry Sobel is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Prominent Brazilian rabbi and human-rights advocate during the military dictatorship era.

How & why

Sobel was a prominent rabbi in São Paulo who became a leading human-rights voice during Brazil's military dictatorship, notably after the 1975 killing of journalist Vladimir Herzog, when he insisted Herzog be buried with dignity rather than as a suicide. Born in Lisbon and raised partly in the United States, he was an ordained Reform rabbi who led one of Latin America's largest Jewish congregations. He was widely honored for building interfaith dialogue and defending democracy.
