Vladimir Herzog was a Brazilian journalist of Croatian-Jewish origin whose family fled to Brazil in 1946. As editor-in-chief of the public broadcaster TV Cultura, he was arrested, tortured and killed in 1975 by the military dictatorship, which falsely staged his death as suicide. The outcry over his murder became a turning point in Brazil's movement toward re-democratization, and his death was decades later officially recognized as torture.
