Henry Roth was an American novelist whose 1934 debut 'Call It Sleep,' portraying an immigrant Jewish boy's childhood on New York's Lower East Side, is regarded as a masterpiece of Jewish-American and modernist literature, rediscovered decades after publication. Born to a Jewish family in Galicia, he immigrated to the United States as a child. He was Jewish.
