Barschall was a nuclear physicist whose precise measurements of neutron cross-sections and neutron scattering became standard reference data for reactor and detector physics. Forced to flee Nazi Germany as a young Jewish man, he settled in the United States, worked on the Manhattan Project, and taught for decades at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was of Jewish origin.
