How & why

Heinemann was an industrial chemist and pioneer of heterogeneous catalysis whose work at Houdry, Mobil and Lawrence Berkeley advanced petroleum refining and processes such as methanol-to-gasoline conversion, across some 75 patents. His doctoral thesis was rejected in Germany because he was Jewish; he completed his PhD in Basel and emigrated to the United States in 1938.
