Rose, an American Jewish physician and microbiologist at Columbia, led the laboratory that in 1948 devised the first practical diagnostic test for rheumatoid arthritis by detecting rheumatoid factor in patients' blood. Developed independently by the Norwegian bacteriologist Erik Waaler, it became known as the Rose-Waaler test and long served as a key rheumatology diagnostic.
