How & why

Hans Arnold Panofsky was a German-American meteorologist and a leading authority on atmospheric turbulence and the planetary boundary layer, the turbulent air near the ground that governs the spread of pollutants. A longtime professor at Penn State, his textbook 'Atmospheric Turbulence' became a standard engineering reference. He was the son of the eminent art historian Erwin Panofsky, and the family, of Jewish origin, fled Nazi Germany.
