Lewy, a German-Jewish mathematician who fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and settled at Berkeley, made deep contributions to partial differential equations. The Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition remains fundamental to numerical computation, while his famous 1957 'Lewy example' showed that some smooth linear equations have no solutions at all. His work shaped analysis in the twentieth century.
