Hanns Eisler was a German composer of Jewish heritage, a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg who became one of the twentieth century's most important composers of political and film music, collaborating closely with playwright Bertolt Brecht. Forced into exile by the Nazis, he worked in Hollywood before being deported during the McCarthy era, later composing the national anthem of East Germany. His theoretical and film-music work remains widely studied.
