How & why

Hannah Senesh was a Hungarian-born Jewish poet who emigrated to Mandatory Palestine and joined the Jewish paratroopers of the British army during World War II. Parachuted into Yugoslavia in 1944 on a mission to help rescue Hungarian Jews, she was captured, tortured and executed in Budapest at age 23. Her poems, including 'Eli, Eli' ('A Walk to Caesarea'), made her an enduring Jewish and Israeli heroine.
