French Symbolist poet and art critic who claimed to have coined the term 'vers libre' (free verse) and was among its first European practitioners. Through the review 'La Vogue' he helped define Symbolism and advance writers such as Laforgue and Rimbaud. A Jew from Lorraine, he was active in Zionism and Jewish cultural life.
