Stent was a German-American molecular biologist and an early member of the phage group around Max Delbrück, whose studies of bacteriophage metabolism helped lay the foundations of molecular genetics; his textbook 'Molecular Biology of Bacterial Viruses' shaped the field. He later turned to neurobiology and to the philosophy and history of science. He came from a Jewish family and emigrated from Nazi Germany in 1940.
