Paley was an American short-story writer, poet and activist, the daughter of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, whose spare, funny and deeply humane stories captured the voices of New York women. Collections such as 'The Little Disturbances of Man' and 'Enormous Changes at the Last Minute' made her a major figure in the American short story. She was also a lifelong peace and feminist activist. Her Jewish immigrant background pervades her work.
