How & why

Ascoli was an Italian mathematician who worked in analysis and introduced the notion of equicontinuity. He is remembered for the Arzelà–Ascoli theorem, a cornerstone result giving conditions under which a family of functions has a uniformly convergent subsequence, central to functional analysis and differential equations. He was born into a Jewish family in Trieste.
