Stork, born in Brussels to a family of Jewish origin who fled to the United States in 1939, became one of the twentieth century's masters of organic synthesis. At Harvard and then Columbia he devised the Stork enamine alkylation and pioneering total syntheses of complex natural products such as quinine.
