According to the biblical narrative in Judges 6-8, Gideon was a farmer from Ophrah called to lead Israel against Midianite raiders who were destroying the harvests. He is described as reducing his force to three hundred men and attacking the Midianite camp at night with torches and horns, routing a far larger enemy through surprise rather than numbers. The text also has him refuse hereditary kingship, saying that God should rule over Israel.
