How & why

Hochschild, born to a Jewish family in Berlin, fled Nazi Germany via South Africa and became a leading algebraist in the United States. He founded homological algebra of associative algebras — Hochschild cohomology — and did deep work on Lie algebras and algebraic groups that pervades modern algebra. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and received the American Mathematical Society's Steele Prize.
