Gerald Aurbach is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Endocrinologist who advanced understanding of parathyroid hormone and calcium regulation

How & why

Aurbach first isolated parathyroid hormone and showed that it acts through cyclic AMP, founding the modern understanding of calcium regulation and bone metabolism. Of Jewish background and born in Cleveland, he led the Metabolic Diseases Branch at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. He was killed in a random act of violence in 1991.
