Biography

George Feher is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Biophysical chemist known for ENDOR and the photosynthetic reaction center

How & why

Feher was a biophysical chemist who invented ENDOR (electron-nuclear double resonance) spectroscopy and, at UC San Diego, isolated and crystallised the photosynthetic reaction centre, work that helped make possible its atomic-structure determination. Born into a Jewish family in Bratislava, he was expelled from school as a Jew in 1938 and escaped Nazi Europe at sixteen with a Zionist youth group, reaching British Mandate Palestine before continuing to the United States in 1946. His methods remain central to structural biology and magnetic resonance.
