Franz Oppenheimer was a German-Jewish sociologist and political economist, son of a Reform rabbi, best known for 'The State' and the 'conquest theory', which held that states arise from the subjugation of one group by another rather than by social contract. He held Germany's first chair of sociology at Frankfurt and later fled the Nazis to the United States.
