François Gros was a French molecular biologist at the Institut Pasteur who, around 1960–61, helped isolate and characterize messenger RNA (mRNA), the unstable intermediary that carries genetic information from DNA to the ribosomes to direct protein synthesis. He later became permanent secretary of the French Academy of Sciences. He came from a non-practicing Jewish family in Paris.
