Fernando Pessoa was a Portuguese poet and writer, one of the greatest figures of twentieth-century literature, famous for writing under numerous 'heteronyms' — invented authors with distinct styles and biographies. He was of partial Jewish descent: his paternal grandmother's family were New Christians (Portuguese Jews forcibly converted to Catholicism), and in an autobiographical note Pessoa described his ancestry as 'a mixture of Jews and nobles.'
