Ezekiel Jonathan 'Zeke' Emanuel, born in Chicago in 1957, is an American oncologist and bioethicist and the eldest of the three Emanuel brothers. He founded and chaired the Department of Bioethics at the U.S. National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, was a key architect and adviser of the Affordable Care Act, and serves as vice provost at the University of Pennsylvania. He was raised in a Jewish family in Chicago as the son of Benjamin Emanuel, a Jewish pediatrician born in Jerusalem.
