Ernst Gombrich was an art historian whose 'The Story of Art' (1950) became the most widely read introduction to art history in the world, and whose 'Art and Illusion' reshaped the theory of pictorial representation. He directed the Warburg Institute in London. He was of Jewish descent — his Viennese family had converted to Protestantism — and emigrated to Britain to escape Nazism.
