How & why

Gellner was a philosopher and social anthropologist best known for his influential theory of nationalism, set out in 'Nations and Nationalism' (1983), which tied nationalism to the needs of industrial society. He was born in Paris to a German-speaking Bohemian Jewish family and grew up in Prague before fleeing the Nazi occupation to Britain. He held chairs at the London School of Economics and Cambridge.
