Ernest Eliel is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Organic chemist known for the study of stereochemistry
Eliel was an organic chemist who did more than anyone to establish stereochemistry — the study of the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules — as a rigorous discipline, above all through his classic textbooks on conformational analysis. He served as president of the American Chemical Society. Born into a Jewish family in Cologne, he fled Nazi Germany, escaping via France, Cuba and South America before reaching the United States.
