Origins and early life
Emilio Treves was born Emilio Salomone Treves in Trieste on 31 December 1834, the son of Sabato Graziadio Treves, formerly rabbi of Turin and then chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Trieste, and of Lia Montalcini, of a well-known Jewish family of Turin; he attended the Jewish elementary schools of Trieste, and his origin, recorded by the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, could hardly be more plainly documented.
Work and career
A typesetter, journalist and translator in his youth, an Italian patriot who fought as a volunteer in the war of 1859, he settled in Milan and in 1861, the year of Italian unity, founded with his brother Giuseppe the publishing house Fratelli Treves, which became the house of the new nation's literature. He published Giovanni Verga's I Malavoglia in 1881, Edmondo De Amicis's Cuore in 1886 — the book on which generations of Italian schoolchildren learned to read and to weep — Gabriele D'Annunzio's Il piacere in 1889, and later Grazia Deledda and Luigi Pirandello, and he created in 1873 L'Illustrazione Italiana, the illustrated weekly that brought the world's news and images into Italian homes for eighty years.
He was a publisher in the modern sense, who paid his authors, advertised, printed for the many and shaped their taste, and the Treves catalogue is, for half a century, the catalogue of Italian letters. He died in Milan on 31 January 1916.
