Biography

Alfred A. Knopf is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Co-founded Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. with Blanche Wolf Knopf in 1915 and made the book itself — its printing, binding and design — part of what a publisher owes the reader.

How & why

Alfred Abraham Knopf Sr. was born into a Jewish family in New York; his mother Ida came from a Latvian Jewish family settled in the city. In 1915 he and Blanche Wolf — whom he married the following year, and who is also in this directory — founded Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. The house made its name by treating the physical book as part of the work: the paper, the binding, the typography, the borzoi on the spine. Knopf brought Thomas Mann, Camus, Kafka, Gide, Sartre and Mishima into English, and published Willa Cather, John Updike and Toni Morrison. He and Blanche ran it together for fifty years.
