How & why
Elsa Triolet, born Ella Kagan, was a Russian-French writer who in 1944 became the first woman to win the Prix Goncourt, France's foremost literary prize. Born into a Jewish family in Moscow, she was of documented Jewish origin, and was the sister of Lilya Brik and the companion of poet Louis Aragon. She was active in the French Resistance.
