How & why
Elsa Morante was an Italian novelist and poet, author of 'History: A Novel' (La Storia, 1974) and 'Arturo's Island', and one of the major Italian writers of the 20th century. She was born in Rome to a Jewish mother, Irma Poggibonsi, and during the war hid in the countryside to escape Nazi persecution. She was of Jewish descent through her mother.
