Elizabeth Neufeld is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Biochemist who elucidated the cellular basis of lysosomal storage diseases.
Neufeld was born in Paris to a Russian Jewish refugee family that fled to the United States in 1940 to escape Nazi persecution. As a biochemist she uncovered the cellular basis of lysosomal storage diseases such as the mucopolysaccharidoses, showing how missing enzymes cause harmful substances to accumulate in cells and opening paths to diagnosis and enzyme-replacement therapy. She received the National Medal of Science in 1994.
