Biography

Efraim Racker is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Biochemist who reconstituted and elucidated the enzyme that synthesizes ATP.

How & why

Racker, a Jewish biochemist born in Galicia who fled Nazi Europe by way of Vienna and Britain to the United States, elucidated how cells make energy. He reconstituted the mitochondrial ATP synthase from purified parts, proving Peter Mitchell's chemiosmotic theory that a proton gradient drives ATP production. Working at Cornell, his reconstitution methods became a cornerstone of bioenergetics.
