How & why
Egon Friedell was an Austrian polymath, cultural historian, essayist, cabaret performer and drama critic, best known for his sweeping A Cultural History of the Modern Age. As the Nazis annexed Austria in the Anschluss, he took his own life to avoid arrest. Born to a Jewish family (as Friedmann), he had converted to Protestantism but was persecuted as a Jew.
