Eduard Suess

Suess was a geologist who founded modern tectonics, coined the terms 'biosphere' and 'Tethys,' and hypothesized the former supercontinent Gondwanaland. He descended from a Jewish family on his mother's side (the Zdekauers of Prague), who had converted to Protestantism before his birth; he nonetheless faced antisemitic attacks over that ancestry as rector of the University of Vienna.
