How & why

Edmond Safra was born in Beirut in 1932 to a Sephardi Jewish family from Aleppo. He founded the Trade Development Bank in Geneva and Republic National Bank of New York, and became one of the leading private bankers of the century. When Syria lifted its travel ban on Jews in 1992 he paid to fly 4,500 Syrian Jews out and to settle them in Brooklyn. He restored or built synagogues from Amsterdam and Istanbul to Manila and Kinshasa, saved the oldest synagogue in France from destruction, and built the first synagogue in Madrid in five hundred years.
