How & why

An Egyptian-born Jew who wrote in French, Jabès was expelled from Egypt in 1957 amid the Suez crisis and settled in Paris. His masterwork, The Book of Questions, weaves Jewish exile, the Holocaust, and the sacredness of the written word into a distinctive poetic-philosophical form. He is regarded as one of the great post-war French-language writers on Jewish memory.
