Biography

Edmond Cohen is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Rebuilt the menswear house De Fursac from 1990 and sold it to the SMCP group in 2019.

How & why

The name and the origins

Edmond Cohen was born in April 1946 in Oujda, in eastern Morocco, into a Moroccan Jewish family — the elder brother of the Paris entrepreneur Marcel George Cohen, as their family records for this directory, which publishes his card as a personal tribute. Each of the two brothers built his own house: they did not work together.

De Fursac

In 1990 he acquired Monsieur de Fursac, a tailoring label founded in Paris in 1973 by the brothers Bertrand and Simon Laufer, and relaunched it. The first boutique opened in 1992 at 112 rue de Richelieu, on the premises of a nineteenth-century tailor's shop.

The rise of the house

Under his direction the house grew into what its buyer would call a French leader in accessible men's luxury, with sales of 41.4 million euros in 2018.

The sale to SMCP

On 5 September 2019 the SMCP group — owner of Sandro, Maje and Claudie Pierlot — completed the purchase of De Fursac from Edmond Cohen, his wife and the FCDE investment fund, in a transaction the financial press put at about 110 million euros. Cohen became president of the brand's supervisory board, handing the direction to Elina Kousourna.

The property companies

The Paris registers also list him at the head of property companies, from Audrey, created in 1985 in the tenth arrondissement, to the family ventures of recent years.
