Douglas Hofstadter is an American cognitive scientist and author whose 1979 book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, a meditation on minds, machines, self-reference and consciousness, won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. He is a professor at Indiana University, where he studies analogy and the mechanisms of thought. His father was the Jewish physicist and Nobel laureate Robert Hofstadter, giving him Jewish ancestry on his father's side, though he was raised without religion.
