How & why

Kőnig wrote the first textbook devoted to graph theory (1936), giving the young field its first systematic foundation, and proved König's theorem on matchings in bipartite graphs, a cornerstone of combinatorial optimization. He was born to a Jewish family in Budapest; his father was the mathematician Gyula Kőnig. He took his own life in 1944 during the Arrow Cross persecution of Hungary's Jews.
