How & why

American poet and short-story writer, celebrated for his 1937 story 'In Dreams Begin Responsibilities' and the youngest-ever winner of the Bollingen Prize (1959). Born to a Jewish immigrant family, he was Jewish; his life and decline inspired Saul Bellow's 'Humboldt's Gift' and he mentored the young Lou Reed.
