How & why
David Samoilov (born David Kaufman) was one of the leading Russian poets of the Second World War generation, whose reflective, neo-Acmeist verse — notably 'Sorokovye' (The Forties) — became emblematic of that era's memory; he also translated widely from Estonian and other languages. He was born in Moscow into an assimilated Jewish family.
