David Mintz was an American food inventor and entrepreneur who spent nine years perfecting a creamy frozen dessert made from tofu, motivated by the kosher need for a non-dairy treat that could follow a meat meal. He launched Tofutti in 1981, the first commercially successful non-dairy tofu ice cream, and built Tofutti Brands into an international company. He was an Orthodox Jew raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
