Biography

David Milman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Functional analysis; the Krein-Milman theorem

How & why

David Milman was a mathematician known for foundational work in functional analysis, above all the Krein–Milman theorem, which shows that a compact convex set is the closed convex hull of its extreme points — a cornerstone of modern analysis. He worked in Odessa before emigrating to Israel, where he was a professor at Tel Aviv University. Milman came from a Jewish family in what is now Ukraine, and his son Vitali Milman is also a noted mathematician.
