Clara Immerwahr is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — First woman to earn a doctorate in chemistry at the University of Breslau; opposed the use of poison gas in war
Clara Immerwahr was the youngest daughter of the Jewish chemist Philipp Immerwahr. In 1900 she became the first woman to take a doctorate in chemistry at the University of Breslau, summa cum laude, at a time when German universities barely admitted women. She married Fritz Haber, opposed his work on chemical warfare, and took her own life in 1915, days after the first large-scale chlorine attack at Ypres; German chemists' associations now award a prize in her name.
