Italian writer, painter and physician, an anti-Fascist whose memoir 'Christ Stopped at Eboli' (1945) drew on his internal exile in Basilicata and exposed the poverty of the rural south. Born to a Jewish family in Turin, he was Jewish and later served as an independent senator.
