Boley was an Italian-American engineer and applied mechanician, a leading theorist of thermal stresses whose textbook (with Jerome Weiner) defined the field; he received the ASME von Kármán Medal in 1991 and led engineering at Northwestern University. Born into a Jewish family in Gorizia, he fled Fascist Italy's antisemitic laws and emigrated to the United States.
