Biography

Bret Weinstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Evolutionary biologist and DarkHorse Podcast host; the Evergreen 2017 affair made him a national figure of the campus-speech debate.

How & why

The evolutionary biologist

Bret Weinstein was born on 21 February 1969 in Los Angeles, into an American Jewish family, the younger brother of the mathematician Eric Weinstein. He read biology at UC Santa Cruz (1993), took his PhD in evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan under Richard D. Alexander, and taught at Evergreen State College in Washington from 2002.

Evergreen, 2017

In 2017 he wrote a letter to the Evergreen faculty objecting to the reworked 'Day of Absence'. The campus protests that followed made him a national figure; a settlement was reached in September 2017 in which Weinstein and his wife, the evolutionary biologist Heather Heying, resigned and received 250,000 dollars each.

DarkHorse, and the controversy said plainly

In June 2019 he launched the DarkHorse Podcast, co-hosted with Heather Heying, and it became one of the big independent science-and-society shows. This card records the controversy as the record states it: during the pandemic he advocated ivermectin and vaccine skepticism, and critics described him as one of the foremost purveyors of COVID-19 misinformation — their words, set down here beside the career, because this directory does not omit such things.
