Biography

Bill Finger is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Comics writer who co-created Batman and shaped the character's enduring mythology.

How & why

Bill Finger was an American comic-book writer who, working with artist Bob Kane, co-created Batman in 1939 and shaped its enduring mythology — naming Gotham City, developing the Joker, Catwoman and Robin, and defining Batman's costume and origin. He went largely uncredited during his life, and only decades after his death did DC Comics officially acknowledge his co-creator role. He was born to a Jewish family in Denver and raised in the Bronx.
