How & why
Bernice Rubens was a Welsh novelist who in 1970 became the first woman to win the Booker Prize, for 'The Elected Member,' a novel drawing on Jewish family life. She wrote more than two dozen books exploring guilt, family and outsiders, and also made documentary films. She came from a Welsh-Jewish family, and Jewish experience runs through much of her fiction.
